info

Every year, the University of Amsterdam will be host of the Econometric Game, one of the most prestigious projects organized by the study association for Actuarial Science, Econometrics & Operational Research (VSAE) of the University of Amsterdam.
The universities participating are expected to send delegations of five students majoring in econometrics or relevant studies with a maximum of two PhD students. The teams will be given a case study, which they will have to resolve in two days. After these days the 10 teams with the best solutions will continue to day three. On the third day the finalists have to solve a second case while the other teams can go sightseeing in Amsterdam. After the teams have explored the city, the Econometric Game Congress takes place. There are different interesting speakers, who will speech about the case and the econometric methods necessary for solving the case. Meanwhile the finalists will finish the second case and will present their solution at the congress. The solutions will be reviewed by a jury of qualified and independent professors, and they will announce the winner of the Game. Each edition, the subject of the case will be held secret until the first day of the Game.

From the moment the first Game was organized by the VSAE in 1999, the Econometric Game has evolved from a one-day national event to a highly respected international event lasting several days. During the previous three editions, competitive teams of over 20 universities have tried to analyze information about child mortality, HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa and the effect of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Through these challenging cases, we try to apply econometrics in unfamiliar fields and test the abilities of participators to use their theoretical knowledge in a practical setting. Among all great solutions submitted by participating teams, the juries voted the University of Madrid Carlos III, Monash University and Maastricht University to be the winners in respectively 2009, 2010 and 2011.
The Econometric Game Committee 2012 strives to further develop the Econometric Game and we hope to establish it as the most prestigious international competition for students of econometrics. These ambitions translate into the desire for an Econometric Game with a broader international scope and even more competitive and illustrious participants.
